A Rollercoaster Racing Weekend: From Mechanical Challenges to Night Racing Triumphs

Racing isn’t just about speed; it’s about overcoming challenges and pushing limits. This weekend was a testament to that, as I navigated through a series of ups and downs on the track. Here’s a breakdown of how each day unfolded.

Thursday: Overcoming Mechanical Hiccups

Thursday was a tough start to the weekend as we were bedding in a new TB KART chassis. The first session was a struggle with an unknown problem that left us with no pace out of corners or down straights. It felt like the kart was on the brink of giving up. By Session 3, we identified a carburetor issue, but unfortunately, it cost us two sessions.

In Session 3, things began to look up as we finally had a normal run and showed impressive pace. However, a loose steering column cut the session short. Session 4 was also brief due to a loose rear bumper. Fortunately, Session 5 and the final two sessions were problem-free, allowing us to demonstrate competitive pace.

It’s really important with a new kart to have a shakedown day like this, to eliminate these minor issues for trouble free running going forward. You often see other people experiencing these issues during a race, which is devastating!

Friday: Finding Our Rhythm

Friday was a complete turnaround with no mechanical issues following a successful shakedown and incredible pace throughout the day. Finally getting comfortable with the new kart, I was able to push hard alongside my teammates, consistently hitting low 58s and even clocking a 57.9. It was a day that truly made up for Thursday’s challenges, and proved just how amazing the TB Chassis is!

Saturday: Wet Conditions and Learning Curves

Saturday morning brought wet conditions at PFI, a track I had never driven on before. Adapting to the wet took time, and I wasn’t performing at my best. A collision in the last corner bent a trackrod, adding to the challenges.

Qualifying was tricky as we went out on slicks only for the rain to return, preventing us from setting a competitive time.

Heat Races and Finals: From Setbacks to Success

Heat 1 was a disaster as I made a poor decision into turn 1, damaging my kart. However, Heat 2 was a different story. Starting from P31, I made a remarkable climb to P11 with some bold moves and maintained my position.

In the B Final, starting from P11, I had a fantastic start, advancing to P5 on the first lap. After some strategic overtakes, I secured 2nd place, earning a spot in the Final.

Final: Consistent Overtakes Under the Night Lights

The Final was my first experience racing at night, starting from P34. With consistent overtakes each lap, I steadily climbed to P24 on track. It was tough racing against strong competitors, with some intense moves around the outside into the hairpins.

After penalties were applied, I finished P17, proving once again that clean driving is as important as working through the pack.

Conclusion: A Weekend of Growth and Resilience

From P60 to P17 in one day, this weekend was a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences. It was a journey of learning and adapting, and despite the challenges, the progress made was invaluable. Racing is as much about overcoming setbacks as it is about the thrill of speed, and this weekend was a testament to that.

Massive thanks to James Taylor for his unwavering support this weekend. Couldn’t have got through it without you. As always thanks to Dad on the spanners and to Force Motorsport for the waft.
